Good News and Bad News

The good news! My wattle in glorious bloom

The good news! My wattle in glorious bloom

The good news is that my wattle is in full bloom and the jonquils are all out but the bad news is that something hungry has just decimated my baby spinach and broccoli and has even eaten the carrot tops and beetroot leaves. I was quite pleased with myself that to date no possums had found my vegetable boxes. I lulled myself into a false sense of security and now with a soundless chomp so much has been eaten. It looks like it is back to the drawing board and nets.

The bad news. Veggie victims of a stealthy chomp!

  1. bummer! đŸ˜¦
before you blame the possies make sure you dont have caterpillars, slugs, snails & grasshoppers… i think a poss would have gone for the broccoli flower buds before the leaves. Check the undersides of all the leaves carefully (that are left). Suggest u set some snail traps (alcohol in the bottom of a can buried) and dry barriers (egg shells/lime) that snails/slugs do not like to cross. Also, check the beds at night with a torch – jar any pests for the chickens (if you have them?)

  2. Don’t panic! They look pretty healthy and will probably recover.
You may like to make a free pest deterrant using anything from your kitchen they say not to put in a compost heap or that your chooks won’t eat
So : garlic, onion, citrus, chilli – keep them separate from chook or compost scraps.
Every few days blend them up fine then add water and a little detergent or soap (to help them adhere to leaves) and spray over whatever the bugs are attacking.
A bit of worm juice from your worm farm or compost will give them a bit of a boost to help recovery.

    • Interesting recipe and suggestions John. I am hopeful somethign will be left to try your ideas out on.It is so frustrating to get the plants to that size and then see them disappear. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is rapidly falling from favour !
