A great idea for a community garden event or a school fair, dare I suggest, is a competition for the best gnome. Floriade hosted a gnome competition for local schools and provided paints and tables etc to keep children occupied at the event itself. I was fascinated by the entries with everything from Gnome goes Gaga, to fantasy figures, to Australiana. I quickly checked out the preloved gnomes to see if I could rescue the one knocked over by the famous election death stare but to no avail.
Whilst gnomes are not really my thing, I have to confess to having one in my home garden. It was given to me by a fellow forest campaigner at the height of the struggle against then Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon’s forest destruction policies.
They were selling at Salamanca market at the time where the politics of forests had become embedded even in the gnome market. It is a pretty good likeness n spite of not having survived the test of time too well.
