My Nellie Kelly passionfruit has been a pathetic vine ever since I planted it. It is always sick and yellow looking no matter what I do to look after it. So last year I made a last ditch effort and decided to grub it out if it failed to fruit.
I read all about passionfruit and subsequently fed it with chelated iron and seaweed fertiliser and amazingly, it responded. I have just had a prolific harvest and have thoroughly enjoyed eating, freezing and giving the fruit away. Chelated iron is the magic solution.
Think I will try this on ours, it’s reached the same stage as your’s last year – do something or out you come….
At least it can’t make it look any worse..
Likewise, my passionfruit is struggling, chelated iron it is. Good one:)
The other difficulty with passionfruit is that after a few years, the stock tries to take over. I missed it on mine, now I think it’s too late to save, but I’m going to give the chelated iron thing a go. One consolation when the stock does take over though: you get magnificent looking flowers (look up passionflower for the background behind the name).
Christine those passionfruit look delicious, thanks for the tip. They are a really unique fruit with a flavour like nothing else.
Will Passionfruits grow in planters on patios in Sydney?
